Classics Competition
Because of the re scheduling of our Open Night to Tuesday 23rd, we were only able to enter one of our teams in the Otago Classics Quiz held at the University of Otago.
But what a team it was! The four members, David Prime, David Spencer, Cameron McDonald and Jesse Bawi won the Intermediate section of the competition with an amazing score of 42 out of a possible 42. Their score even beat the winners of the junior secondary competition (LPHS) who were participating in the same competition. The cup is now proudly displayed in the school foyer. Congratulations to our very knowledgeable boys.
Student Achievement
David Spencer (Room 6) heard about the World Wildlife Fund at school in last year's speech competition and decided he really liked the approach of acquiring habitat for endangered animals. He saved up some pocket money and sponsored a moose. He then talked his church youth group into fundraising for the WWF and together they sponsored some tigers. This year, he saw in the paper people who shaved their heads to raise money for cancer. He decided that was something he could do, and so he started getting sponsors. Last month was the big day when he had his head shaved in the middle of winter (and he had a lot of hair), and started to collect from his sponsors. Last week he got the last of the money in, and was delighted to see he had raised $505 for WWF. That's more than 80 weeks pocket money for him.
David and his parents sent his story to the WWF New Zealand office. They were tickled to hear about him, and sent him an email making him an official WWF supporter. They also plan to send him a special certificate to acknowledge his efforts.

Red Sock / Leadership Day
Last Friday students gathered in their House Groups to learn about leadership and to participate in DNI’s first leadership day. The day culminated in a special assembly where each house presented their findings to the other house groups.
Our first Peter Blake Leadership award was presented to Tayla Richardson by Keran Maynard of Westpac Bank, the sponsor of the awards throughout New Zealand. Tayla has demonstrated her leadership in a number of ways during her time at DNI. Last year she led her class, Room 13, in a school wide can drive for the people of Christchurch after the first earthquake.
This year she organised a class camp at Quarantine Island for her class and she is very busy with the Environmental Group. Tayla gets involved and follows through her ideas with actions. She leads by example. We think that this makes her a good leader, worthy of this award.
Art Awards
The prize giving for the Otago Youth Art Awards was held last Friday evening. Special congratulations to Caitlyn Kilner, whose work won first prize in the 11 – 13 year old section, and Liam O’Brien who was third in the same section.

Extra Spelling Quiz
This quiz was held last week at Tahuna Normal Intermediate. There were 60 teams competing for the honours and amongst those were our four teams: DNI 1 Erica Stedman, Aria Nader-Turner and Charlotte Dickie, DNI 2 David Prime, Lawrence Brett and Tanya Findlater, DNI 3 Oscar LaDell, Isabel Locker and Carmen Heinze-Farrington and DNI 4 Lydie Leurquin, Katharine Woolrych and Beth Fitchett.
Teams were given words to spell, proofreading exercises, questions about the derivation of words and dictionary skills. The competition was extremely close with our talented DNI 3 team finishing just one point behind the winning teams with a score of 97 out of a hundred. An amazing score which in other years may well have been a winning one.
The other three teams also finished extremely well. DNI 1 scored 93, DNI 2 scored 89 and DNI 4 scored 90 putting all teams in the top half of the competition. Well done to all the participants in this quiz. The competition just getting into the teams to represent DNI was tough.
